Geriatric Mental Health Services

Geriatric Mental Health Services at the Institute of Living focus on the physical and mental changes of aging, the specific needs and tasks of older adults and the issues of adjustment that accompany the aging process. In addition to offering a comprehensive array of mental health programs for older adults, the IOL is a center for research and education aimed at improving the health care and well-being of older people.

Programs for older adults include a 28-bed inpatient unit offering evaluation and treatment of acute or complex mental health problems, an intensive day program that offers group, family and individual treatment based on individualized treatment plans, and an outpatient practice of Geriatric and Adult Psychiatry. The Geriatric Service also provides home visits and outreach to seniors living at home, conducts educational programs in the community, and collaborates with a range of physicians and agencies.
